What is a Casino?

Casino

A casino is a gambling establishment that offers a variety of games where people can win money. It may add extra luxuries such as restaurants, free drinks and stage shows to attract customers. It has been suggested that the word is derived from a Latin phrase, “caesar sultan”, meaning “king of the games”.

In spite of their lavish appearances, casinos make money by betting on the outcome of a game of chance. Each of their games has a built in mathematical advantage for the house. It might be only two percent or less, but it adds up over the millions of bets placed by patrons each day.

This virtual guarantee of gross profit allows casinos to offer big bettors extravagant inducements to gamble. These include free spectacular entertainment, limousine transportation and elegant living quarters. Even smaller bettors are offered complimentary food and drink, hotel rooms and reduced-fare transportation.

Something about gambling seems to encourage some of its patrons to cheat, steal or scam their way to a jackpot. This is why casinos spend a significant amount of time and money on security.

Some casinos specialize in specific types of games, attracting particular groups of gamblers. For example, roulette appeals to small bettors while craps attracts high bettors. Most American casinos have slot machines and video poker, which generate income by high volume, rapid play and the ability to adjust their payouts. They are usually decorated in bright colors, often red, to stimulate the players and make them lose track of time.
